Description of Activities

The City of Dallas proposes to link green building techniques with affordable housing initiatives to construct highly energy efficient green homes.

Deliverables & Environmental Results

  • Affordable green model homes in Joppa, South Fair Park, and West Dallas (disadvantaged areas), reducing energy demand and NOx emissions
  • Green building standards to be used throughout the City for residential construction
  • Modifications to existing City codes/policies to implement the green building standards City-wide
  • Training and educational programs to regional stakeholders and builders on green building concept and encourage its use in residential construction
  • NOx reduced/avoided from power plants due to reduced energy demand
  • Use Federal matching funds and potential private funds

Project TimelineProject Timeline

  • September – December 2007: Meet with partners to plan construction
  • March 2008 --  Integrate energy efficient materials into plans
  • July 2008 – Start construction
  • November 2008 – Begin analysis of green building ordinances/standards for Dallas
  • March 2009 – Present proposed ordinances to City Council; Get approval
  • June 2009 – Construction of 30 homes complete
  • July 2009 – June 2010: Training for builders on new city green building ordinances
